[Wisdom from Others] Without a Fearsome Fighting Spirit, Nothing Can Be Achieved

“Precisely because there are hardships and struggles—if we don’t muster a fearsome fighting spirit, things won’t go as planned, and we cannot succeed as expected.”

With Strong Will and Adaptability, Achieve Your Goals

The business environment is constantly evolving. Exchange rates fluctuate, customer orders change—everything is in motion. Yet even amid this ever-changing landscape, we must press forward with a strong will and adapt to circumstances to realize our established goals.

In business, willpower is everything. For leaders, the unwavering determination to accomplish goals—no matter what—is absolutely essential.

And this willpower cannot reside only in the leader; it must permeate the entire team. A fighting spirit that unites the group is indispensable. Phrases like “We tried hard, but the result wasn’t ideal—it can’t be helped,” or “Let’s do better next month, everyone,” reveal a dangerous complacency. With such attitudes, no team—whether a department, division, or entire company—can grow strong.

Kyocera, in its early days, also faced similar moments. At one point, I told employees:

“If you fail, I’ll be right behind you with a machine gun. There’s no retreat—move forward with the courage of someone who has nothing to lose.”

That statement, though intense, ignited courage in people through fear. Today, to employees who view compassionate bosses as ideal, I might seem cold or even terrifying.

But as a leader, sometimes such severity is necessary—not to instill fear, but to achieve the goal.

When people aren’t pushed to their limits, they often fail to deliver. Once a team becomes accustomed to missing its targets, failure becomes a pattern.

And once that happens, the team loses its fighting strength. A team with no experience of victory—one that hasn’t learned the logic of winning—will never succeed.

For a leader, holding fast to your will from beginning to end is a difficult, demanding task. It is also tough on your team. But precisely because it is difficult and painful, you must summon a fearsome fighting spirit—otherwise, nothing will go as hoped, and no true success will be achieved.

Set Clear, Concrete Goals

A leader must not only set long-term goals but also identify practical methods for achieving them. It’s crucial to explain the reasons behind the goals, the leader’s own understanding and intentions, and specific steps toward implementation.

In this process, deep and honest communication with team members is essential. Only by winning their full understanding and commitment can the organization unite and work together toward success.

Visualize in Detail, and You Will Succeed

In life, if you want to accomplish something, you must first visualize the ideal outcome. Then simulate the steps toward that goal in your mind—over and over—until you can see the final result.

This is the power of strong, sustained desire.

Start by setting a bold, ambitious target. Think it through repeatedly until your ideal and reality overlap in your mind. When you reach this point, outstanding results naturally follow.

What’s fascinating is this:

Whatever you can clearly see in your mind beforehand will inevitably come true in reality.

If You Can See It, You Can Achieve It

If you have a strong desire to accomplish something, and you can see it vividly in your mind’s eye—down to the details—then that desire already proves you have the potential power to make it happen.

People don’t aspire to things beyond their capacity. We don’t generate completely unrealistic desires. So if you can clearly picture the process and outcome of success, your chances of success are very high.

Close your eyes and imagine what success looks like. If that image is detailed, vivid, and logical, you will succeed. That desire of yours will come true.
