Drive Chain Adjustment Motorcycle
To get the motorcycle drive chain adjustment right, you have to keep an eye on that chain sag. By manufacturer standards, this value usually shrinks between 25mm and 35mm. This adjustment is not only to prevent the sprocket from grinding too quickly, but most importantly to prevent the chain from breaking halfway and causing an accident. First, support the motorcycle according to the maintenance manual, whether it is a side brace or a maintenance rack. Loosen the rear axle nut with a large socket, then twist the adjusting bolts or sliders on both sides of the rocker arm little by little, symmetrically from side to side, to change the tension. Be sure to check the alignment scale on the rocker arm. If the rear wheel is crooked, the handling feeling of the motorcycle will become very bad when riding. Finally, measure the sag at the tightest point of the chain, and then use a torque wrench to lock the rear axle nut to the standard value to ensure that the entire rear wheel assembly is stable. This process can not only extend the life of the transmission system, but also keep your riding safety, so that the motorcycle can produce smooth power in various road conditions.

Why Is The Sag Of 25mm-35mm “Dead Command”?
The easiest mistake a novice can make is to pull the chain as tight as a string. This is very dangerous. This 25mm to 35mm sag is not just a random head pat; it’s designed to give the rear suspension room for compression. If the chain is too tight, when you get in the motorcycle or go over a bumpy road, the suspension compresses and the chain will be pulled to its limit in an instant, which will put huge pressure on the output shaft bearing and may even break directly. Conversely, if the sag exceeds 40mm, the chain may derail at high speeds.
Prepare for Adjustment
Before you do anything, you need to figure out how to prop up your motorcycle. Some manufacturers require measuring with side braces, while others require using a lifting frame to raise the rear wheels. Different support methods can directly change the chain tension reading, so don’t take it for granted and look in your repair manual. As for tools, have a large socket and afterburner ready to handle that rear axle nut that’s usually incredibly tight.
Adjustment Techniques
Adjust the bolts and never tighten them too hard. My habit is to move only 1/8 or 1/4 turn at a time on both sides, and both sides must be in perfect sync. Because you have to rely on the alignment scale on the rocker arm to ensure that the rear wheel is positive. If you don’t adjust the left and right evenly, the rear wheels will go sideways, which will not only ruin your chains and sprockets, but also make you feel like the motorcycle is going to “oppose” you when you turn.

This is something many DIY players will miss: the chain never wears evenly. Before you make your final measurement, you’ll need to turn the rear wheel by hand and try a few positions to find the one with the smallest sag “the tightest point”. We’re going to adjust the sag to a standard 25mm-35mm at this point. If you adjust it to 30mm at the loosest point, the chain may be so tight that there is no margin at all at the tightest point.
The Last Line Of Defense

The torque wrench must be used in the final step. It is very unprofessional to tighten the rear axle nut according to your feel. If the rear wheel is loosened, it will wobble. If it is tightened too tightly, it may crush the bearing. Look up the torque standards in the manual and lock them with a click to ensure that the entire drivetrain can operate safely and smoothly under various loads.
