Can A Loose Motorcycle Chain Cause Vibration
Yes, a loose motorcycle chain is a primary cause of excessive vibration, particularly noticeable at lower speeds or during deceleration. When the tension of the chain is not enough, there will be what we often call the “whip effect”-the two -3-kilogram metal chain will swing irregularly between the front and rear toothed plates, slapping it on the rear rocker arm or chain guide.
As a rider, you will obviously feel bursts of pulsing vibration from your left foot and handle, usually accompanied by the rhythmic “clattering” or “clicking” sound of metal impact. The most important point is that this vibration and sound follow your speed, not the engine speed (RPM).
Although it is said that a little loosening of the chain is a common minor problem in our daily maintenance, if you know that it is very loose and still have to bite the bullet, it is really killing you. Once the chain jumps or even falls off, it may directly cause the rear wheel to lock up, or the engine case to pieces. If you have already felt these symptoms, stop for inspection immediately, and don’t take hidden dangers to pull the highway.
Understanding The “Whip Effect”
In the final analysis, the core cause of loose chain vibration lies in the “whip effect”. You know, motorcycle chains are heavy metal objects that rotate at high speed. When the tension is right, it can smoothly transfer the power from the gearbox to the rear wheels; but once the margin is too large, the stability is lost. It no longer walks in a straight line, but swings like a wave between the front and rear toothed discs.
This is not a slight shaking, metal chain links with huge kinetic energy will actually hit the rocker buffer glue or chain guide. Every “whip” impact will produce a shock wave, which will be transmitted directly along the frame. This is the source of vibration you feel. This situation is most serious when the oil is decelerated. Because at this time the pulling force above the chain was loosened, and the rest was piled up there, throwing it the most happily under the action of inertia.

How To Locate The Source Of Vibration
The difference in this feel is mainly reflected in two aspects:
Vibration Location
Your left foot knows first. Because the driving chain of most motorcycles is on the left, the vibration will be directly transmitted to the frame and pedal bracket along the chain. If the situation is serious, this kind of harmonic wave will even be uploaded along the frame, shaking the handle to numb, and the hand will not feel it after riding for a long time.
Speed vs RPM
This is the most reliable criterion. The engine vibration is linked to the speed (RPM), while the chain vibration is only related to the vehicle speed.
Test Method
You hold the clutch during the ride, keep the engine at idle speed, and let the car coast. If the vibration is still there at this time, or the vibration frequency changes as the vehicle speed slows down, then don’t think about it, it is definitely not the engine, it is 100% the transmission system (that is, the chain).

Auditory Clues: The “Slapping” Sound
Loosen chains are not usually quiet. Is often a very rhythmic noise.
The Slap
This is the sound of a metal chain hitting the rubber or plastic chain guide plate on the rocker arm.
The Clunk
This usually happens the moment you just give the oil. The originally loose chain was suddenly straightened and hit the teeth of the toothed disc hard, making a crisp metal crash.
Unlike the constant hum or roar of the engine, the noise of the chain is frustrating and neurotic, and is completely synchronized with the “whip” action mentioned earlier.
Why It Must Be Tackled Now
Riding a car with a loose chain is not only annoying,it is a great safety hazard. The 3 risk mentioned earlier, I think every rider has to engrave it in his mind:

Unchaining
This is the most serious consequence. If the chain is too loose, the back gear plate will not be able to hang it. Once it slips sideways, the consequences will be unimaginable.
Rear Wheel Lock
In case the chain falls off, it is easy to accumulate between the toothed disc and the rocker arm. This is like a metal wedge, instantly stuck the rear wheel. At this speed, the rear wheel locks up, which is basically an out-of-control crash.
Crush The Engine Case
Even if you are lucky enough not to fall off the car, the falling off chain will throw the small fly (front gear plate position) to the front with huge energy, which will easily crack the engine case directly. Once the oil leaks, the engine is basically useless, and the money for changing the assembly is enough for you to cry several times.
