How To Fix Tight Spot On Motorcycle Chain

To fix the “dead knot” or tight spot on the motorcycle chain, you must first find out whether the stiffness is caused by external dirt or internal wear.

If the chain link is stuck just because of dirt or rust on the surface, then you can completely soak it with professional chain cleaning agent or kerosene, brush it hard with nylon brush, spray high-quality permeable lubricant, and break it repeatedly , usually you can restore flexibility. However, if the so-called “tight point” refers to uneven chain tension (that is, the chain is tight when the wheel turns to one position and loose when it turns to another position), this is usually caused by uneven stretching of the side plates or wear of internal pins and bushings.

But if the chain has obvious uneven tension, or is due to oil seal (O-ring) Damage to the “dead joint”, then its structural integrity has been lost. In this case, forced maintenance is not safe, you must replace the chain and the size of the flywheel (sprocket) together, otherwise easily lead to broken chain or damage to the engine output shaft.

Diagnosis: Is It Surface Dirt Or Structural Damage

Before moving the wrench, you must distinguish which “tight point” you are facing “. Errors in diagnosis are either a waste of effort, and more dangerously, you could be riding a chain that could break at any moment.

Stuck links (the kind that can be saved): You will find that certain links do not straighten out when they leave the sprocket, but maintain a “V” shape. This is usually the road sludge, salt or surface oxide to the outer chain plate to stick.

Uneven tension (cannot be saved): when you put the frame up and turn the rear wheel, you find that the sag (slack) of the chain is changing-one place is extremely tight, and it is hanging down again after turning. This indicates that the internal components of the chain (pins and bushings) are not worn evenly.

How To Repair The Chain Link Of Surface Adhesion

This video explains how to solve the problem of uneven tension in motorcycles:

If the inspection finds that it is only dirty or slightly rusted, it can be operated according to my professional cleaning and lubricating process.

Step 1: Deep Soak

Directly on the professional oil seal chain cleaning agent or kerosene. Kerosene is extremely useful in breaking down stubborn old grease and will not damage the rubber seal. Spray the problematic link through and let it soep there for a few minutes to make sure the potion goes into the shaft.

Step 2: Vigorously Scrub

Take a special nylon chain brush and brush the stiff chain link hard from four sides. Your aim is to clean up all the dust and debris that affect the movement between the inner and outer chain plates.

Step 3: Manual “Massage” And Lubrication

Spray a high-quality permeable lubricant and repeatedly move the dead joint by hand (use pliers if it is too tight, but the force should be light). Repeat this action until it becomes as flexible as any other link. After finishing, wipe off the excess cleaning agent, and finally apply a layer of chain wax or lubricating oil.

Why Is “Uneven Tension” Absolutely Bad?

Many motorcycle friends try to “fix” the problem by adjusting the sag at the tightest point of the chain. Although this can temporarily prevent the chain from breaking down immediately, it is a temporary solution but not a permanent solution.

The uneven tension is due to the different degree of stretching of the side plates or the severe wear of the internal bushings, which means that the pitch of the chain (the distance between the pins) is no longer uniform.

  • Potential danger: Chains with inconsistent pitches will vibrate violently when running. This pulsed load will directly impact the output shaft bearings and rear wheel bearings of your engine.
  • Structural failure: If a chain link is “discounted” due to the failure of the oil seal, it means that the grease sealed in the original factory has leaked out and the metal-to-metal wear has begun. Once the seal is gone, no matter how much lubricating oil you spray later, you will not be able to get into the shaft core.

When Should I Accept The Replacement

In the motorcycle repair business, safety is always the first. If the dead joint is still there after deep cleaning, or if the chain tension changes greatly when the wheel is turned, the life of the chain will end.

Replacement Package:

When there is a structural tight point in the chain, it will also grind the tooth shape of the sprocket into a “hook shape”. If you put a new chain on the old sprocket, the new chain will soon be worn out. Therefore, I strongly suggest that the chain, big fly and small fly must be replaced in complete sets.

How To Prevent Death:

Clean and lubricate every 300-500 miles.

Be sure to clean the chain after getting in the rain or walking on the salt road.
